The most compelling interiors have a sense of belonging to the buildings they occupy. Their proportions, materials and detailing are developed in response to the architecture, creating rooms in which every element contributes to the character of the whole.
At Huntsmore, interior design is an integral part of our architectural work. From the spatial arrangement of rooms through to the selection of finishes, fittings and furnishings, we develop interiors with a clear understanding of the building and how it will be lived in.
Our work encompasses the comprehensive renovation of houses and apartments across West and Central London, with particular experience in period and listed properties. As a BIID Registered Design Practice, we bring together architectural understanding, design expertise and the practical knowledge required to work sensitively within these buildings.
A response to the building
Every property presents its own architectural qualities, constraints and opportunities. Our approach begins by understanding these characteristics alongside the homeowner’s ambitions for the space.
In a listed apartment, this may mean working with original decorative features and historic proportions. Elsewhere, a more contemporary architectural language may be appropriate, introducing new materials and detailing that establish a deliberate contrast with the existing building.
Rather than applying a recognisable house style, we develop each scheme around the architecture and the intended character of the home.
Materials, proportion and detail
The quality of an interior lies in the relationship between its individual elements.
The scale of fitted joinery, the texture of natural materials, the way light falls across a surface and the transition between different finishes all influence the experience of a room. These decisions are developed together, with attention given to both the overall composition and the smallest details.
Our interior design services encompass kitchen and bathroom design, flooring, wall finishes, lighting, ironmongery, window treatments and soft furnishings. Furniture selection and procurement can also be incorporated, allowing the scope of the interior scheme to reflect the requirements of each commission.
Design concepts are developed through architectural references, mood boards and material studies, with samples reviewed in person at our Kensington studio. This allows colours, textures and finishes to be assessed together before final selections are made.
Architecture and interiors, developed together
At Huntsmore, interior design is not a separate stage introduced once the architectural plans have been completed.
Our architectural and interior design work progresses together, allowing the arrangement of rooms, the design of joinery and the selection of materials and fittings to inform one another from the outset.
Working alongside our project management and bespoke joinery services, this approach provides continuity through design development and construction, helping to preserve the relationship between the architectural proposals and the finished interior.
